BECOME A RIDE LEADER
As a ride leader, you are a representative of the club. As such, you should be informative and friendly and be sure that new riders know the route and are not left to feel they are not “part of the group.” Your actions on club rides may be the lasting impression that new riders remember most about All Ass No Gas Cycling Club.

AANGCC rides are open to everyone who is willing and able to participate safely and cooperatively. All we ask is that you bring a positive and supportive attitude to the club. We do not and will never discriminate against anyone who wants to become a member of our club. Furthermore, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, sexual preference, religion, or political affiliation. Here, everyone is absolutely welcome.
RIDE LEADER PREREQUISITES
If you think you'd like to become a ride leader, please email us at allassnogascycling@gmail.com. You will have to attend a AANGCC ride leadership training. You will also have to need to complete a minimum of 10 mandatory club rides to be considered for this position.
Current AANGCC members who want to lead a ride must also attend our ride leadership training. Current members who have already completed 10 group rides will automatically be considered for the position - upon training completion.
RIDE LEADER CREDIT AWARD
Lead 96 group rides (Dec. 1 - Nov. 30) to qualify for ride leader award.
A 2-night staycation at the W Austin Hotel will be awarded to winner of the award. Ride leader award will be awarded to those who fulfill their ride leader responsibilities including:
- Route planning
- Pre-ride safety speech
- Pre-ride group photos and videos submission
- Post ride group photos and videos submission
- Ensuring that all riders return safely
TOP MEMBER RECRUIT
All current members are eligible to participate to participate in new member recruitment program. Members can help grow the club by inviting friends, family, and co-workers to join the team. Each year, we will award the top 3 members who recruit the most members to the club. Recruitment period will be from 12/01 - 11/30.

THE GUIDELINES
Use these guidelines plus a healthy dose of common sense for each and every AANGCC ride that you lead.
ROUTE MAPPING
- Start with a mapping software, ridewithgps.com (RWGPS), then drive it or ride it to finalize your route. Stay off highly trafficked roads unless bike accommodations are in place. Be careful on multi-modal paths, where extra precautions are necessary for horse, stroller, and dog traffic.
- The club has an account with RWGPS which includes an ever-growing database of maps that can be used for route selection, or you can create your own. You can create a personal free account then request an invitation from the team captain for access to the club account features.
SCHEDULING A RIDE
- After you have finalized your route map on Ride With GPS, you can share the route with members by posting it on the club's Facebook and Instagram page. You can also share it by texting the members in a group text message.
- Club rides must be posted a minimum of 48 hours prior to their scheduled start time. If a ride is already posted on the club's website, and you would like to lead that ride, contact team captain within 24 hours of the ride to be assigned to it.
- Check the upcoming ride calendar prior to scheduling a ride to avoid duplication or conflict.
BEFORE THE RIDE
- Make sure that you are prepared, have your bike and all your gear in good working order, along with your ride leader binder ready to go. Also, don't forget your bottles and any food you need.
DAY OF THE RIDE
- If something comes up and you cannot lead your ride – Send an email, call and text team captain ASAP.
- Arrive in plenty of time to meet new riders and prepare your bike and yourself for the ride, at least 30 minutes before departure time.
- Begin the ride promptly at the scheduled time.
- If the weather is marginal, go to the start anyway. If thunder, lightning, or driving rain or snow is imminent - it's better to cancel at the start than expose our riders to hazards.
- If you need to cancel or change your start point or start time, do so far enough in advance, the night before or morning of is best. You will need to pencil a group text message to all members about the change.
- To cancel a due to weather or any other reason, you must do so at least 2 hours prior to scheduled start time.
RIDE START
- Introduce yourself to members.
- Announce the route and route and make sure it's understood.
- Announce regroup locations where applicable - or no regrouping.
- Announce the distance, pace, and elevation.
- Advise riders that they are riding at their own risk.
- Inform riders to adhere to all state traffic laws.
- Don't block the roadways. Ride in single file on in narrow roads
- Call out “Car back” when a car is approaching.
- Don't call out “Clear” when crossing intersections.
- Running a red light or a stop sign is an absolute no-no.
- Don't pull in front of motorists at stop signs or lights.
- Inform the ride leader or another rider if anyone leaves the route.
IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS
- In the event of an accident, the ride leader should first attend to any injured persons. Unless the injuries are minor, emergency medical help and the police should be summoned.
- Always make the right decision for the safety of the injured individual.
- Any accident involving a motorist should have a police presence.
- The ride leader should secure the rider's bicycle and equipment that cannot be transported in the ambulance. Check with a nearby home or business.
- Take photos of the accident scene to document occurrences.
- Use the note section in your phone to document the incident as accurately and thoroughly as possible. DO NOT leave any information out. You will need to transfer the notes to the club's incident report form when you get back home. Your notes will help serve as evidence should the incident end up in court
- Contact the team captain or any board member as soon as practicable after the accident
